Veteran music producer Zapp Mallet has commended Ghana’s young sound engineers, noting that they are performing impressively, even as he acknowledges a generational gap in the music industry.
He attributes this disconnect to technology, which has empowered young artists to learn and produce music independently.
“I think the young sound engineers are doing well. I might not be able to name them offhand, but I can say I’m proud of what I hear. Whether it’s AI or not, I’m impressed with their work. They’re doing their best,” Zapp said in a recent interview with Graphic Showbiz.
He added, “The older generation hasn’t connected well with these young talents. Some of them just got a microphone and started producing. I would blame technology more than anyone for this disconnect. Today, a young person can watch tutorials on YouTube so what need do they have for a Zapp Mallet?”
Mallet emphasized that technology is not to blame for human effort; it has merely changed the way things are done and is here to stay. He noted that the focus should be on assessing the situation and finding ways to work with it, since, ultimately, they are humans, not robots.
Despite the challenges, Zapp Mallet believes the Ghanaian music industry has great potential. He stressed the importance of continual improvement and collaboration between the older and younger generations to make the industry even stronger.
