L.I Withdrawal: Good Move but Bow Your Heads in Shame
We wish to commend the government for the withdrawal of the Amendment to the Road Traffic Regulation 2012. This decision is a step in the right direction, reflecting responsiveness to the concerns and outcry of the citizens. However, we must express our disappointment and frustration at the unnecessary tension and aggression this proposal caused.
This amendment was never needed. The existing regulations are sufficient and serve the public interest. “If it is not broken, don’t fix it.” We advise that any thoughts of reviving such amendments be permanently shelved. There is no justification for such changes, and the government should focus on more pressing issues that genuinely impact the lives of Ghanaians.
We also criticize the unnecessary defense mounted by some Members of Parliament for this amendment. Their arguments were not only unconvincing but also revealed a disconnect between the political elites and the everyday experiences of ordinary Ghanaians. It is disheartening to see our leaders prioritize their comfort over the safety and well-being of the public they are supposed to serve.
The youth of Ghana are gradually losing faith in our country. While we strive to contribute positively and hope for a better future, the political elites seem more concerned with amending legal frameworks to enhance their comfort under the guise of working for Ghana. This is unacceptable and deeply troubling.
A word to the wise is enough. We call on our leaders to refocus their efforts on addressing the real issues facing our nation and to always remember that their primary duty is to serve the people.
