$2m Sky Train trial: Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s lawyer steps down

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi

The lawyer representing former Board Chairperson of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, has withdrawn his services in the ongoing case in which the former board chair and the Fund’s Chief Executive Officer, Solomon Asamoah, are standing trial for allegedly causing a $2 million financial loss to the state.

The two have been charged with six counts, including conspiracy, willfully causing financial loss to the state, and intentional dissipation of public funds. Both have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

When the case was called on Monday, October 13, for the prosecution to present its first witness, Mr. Asamoah’s counsel was in court, but Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s lawyer was absent.

Presiding judge Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay inquired about the absence of the lawyer. In response, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi said, “I had a misunderstanding with my lawyer, and it is being mediated.”

However, the court clerk then informed the judge of a letter submitted by the lawyer, Duke Aaron Sasu, formally withdrawing his representation.
“Your lawyer has written to the court that he is no longer representing you,” Justice Kocuvie-Tay told the accused.

Meanwhile, counsel for Mr. Asamoah, led by Victoria Barth, has filed an application for stay of proceedings pending an appeal against the trial court’s earlier ruling that dismissed their motion for further disclosures. The motion is expected to be heard on October 20, 2025.

The court adjourned proceedings to allow the defence team to serve the prosecution and for Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi to secure new legal representation.
