Ghanaian woman beaten, robbed by Nigerian immigration officers at checkpoint

Confidence Ayram Gbevitor, a Ghanaian woman traveling from Lagos to Lomé, has accused Nigerian immigration officers of physically assaulting her at the Agbara checkpoint on Saturday, November 15.

According to Ms. Gbevitor, the officers stopped her vehicle and asked for her passport. She reportedly presented her Ghana card instead, explaining that she did not have her passport with her.

The officers allegedly confiscated her Ghana card and summoned her to meet a superior. “When I explained that I did not have my passport, he said, ‘You are a Ghanaian. I hear Ghana Immigration has been embarrassing Nigerians. I will also embarrass you,’” she recounted.

Before she could respond, Ms. Gbevitor says she was slapped and attacked by other officers, who struck her head from multiple angles. She was reportedly forced to sit on the floor, drenched with water, and held for two hours.

During the ordeal, the officers allegedly took the only money she had on her, 10,000 CFA.

“I was so traumatized that I didn’t think to take pictures,” she said, describing the experience as deeply harrowing.

The incident has sparked serious concerns about the treatment of travelers at Nigerian checkpoints. “No one should face such brutality just because of their nationality,” Ms. Gbevitor emphasized.

Neither Nigerian nor Ghanaian authorities have commented on the incident, raising questions about cross-border safety and the protection of foreign travelers.
