The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has shown a strong commitment to improving prison facilities and the care of prisoners as President.
Dr. Bawumia, known for his compassion to the Prisons Service, stated during his campaign tour to Akim Oda in the Eastern Region, following the introduction of the 2024 NPP manifesto, that his government will prioritize the building of jail facilities to make it a true rehabilitation institution.
“My government will improve prison infrastructure to enhance rehabilitation of prisoners,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
Regarding the welfare of inmates, Dr. Bawumia also declared that his government will greatly raise the allowances given to inmates, which are currently set at GH¢1.80 per day and are in his opinion insufficient.
Given his particular passion for providing inmates with personal interventions, Dr. Bawumia’s declaration may not come as a surprise to many.
A few years ago, in response to a direct request from the service, Dr. Bawumia personally implemented the rewiring of the Ashanti Regional Central Prisons.
In order to serve both prisoners and guards, he also helped the Prisons Service build drinkable water systems in numerous prisons.
Dr. Bawumia received a plaque from the Prisons Service’s Ashanti Regional directorate as a thank you for his help after he made his own interventions.
It is now a relief to see that he prioritized the wellbeing of the prisoners and the development of their facilities.
