The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has called for the immediate declaration of a targeted state of emergency in all areas affected by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The appeal was made during a courtesy call on President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House.
The bishops raised concerns about the devastating impact of galamsey on water bodies, forests, farmlands, and the health of local communities.
The President of Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, Most Rev. Matthew Gyamfi argued that the proposed state of emergency would enable the government to deploy the necessary resources and enforcement mechanisms to restore affected areas and prevent further damage.
He indicated that, a limited state of emergency in all the affected zones to suspend all mining activities temporarily.
