An Accra Circuit Court has remanded two off-duty police constables in custody for assaulting an Okada rider and stealing GH¢3,700.

General Lance Corporals Philmon Agbevem and Peter Kwame Badagbor, both from the Accra Central District Police Command, have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime and robbery.

The defendants were said to have compelled the complainant to transfer money from his mobile phone to another phone registered in the name of Hope Alorvordzi.

The two, represented by Andy Vortia, have denied all charges.

Their court date is September 10, 2024, with Evelyn Asamoah leading over the legal proceedings.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kofi Anane, the prosecutor, informed the court that Emmanuel Amertodor, the complainant, is an Okada rider who resides in Adenta. ASP Emmanuel Haligah provided support for the prosecution.

Based on allegations that he and his pillion rider had stolen a purse containing a cell phone and other personal belongings from a woman at the National Theatre and were traveling to the Thomas Sankara roundabout, the two off-duty police officers on a motorcycle with registration number GP 8145 detained the complainant on July 21, 2024.

The accused followed the motorcycle riders and stopped them at the Christ the King traffic light in front of the Jubilee House, according to the prosecution.

They were carrying weapons and were clothed in their uniforms.

The complaint, the pillion rider, was captured while the rider managed to flee when they attempted to apprehend them.

According to the prosecution, the two policemen handcuffed the plaintiff after severely hitting

him.

The complainant’s phone was forced to transfer GH¢3,700 to a mobile phone number belonging to Hope Alovordzi, after which they seized GH¢120 from him.

The prosecution claims that the accused pursued the motorbike riders and stopped them at the Christ the King traffic light in front of the Jubilee House.

They were dressed in their uniforms and carrying firearms.

When they tried to arrest them, the pillion rider, who was the subject of the complaint, was caught, but the rider was able to escape.

The prosecution claims that after giving the plaintiff a hard blow, the two police officers handcuffed him.

After forcing the complainant’s phone to transfer GH¢3,700 to Hope Alovordzi’s mobile phone number, they took GH¢120 from him.
