Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has returned to Ghana after several weeks of medical leave in the United Kingdom.
Her arrival at the Kotoka International Airport on Friday was met with warmth, relief, and celebration from President John Dramani Mahama, First Lady Lordina Mahama, and a host of senior government officials.
Flanked by the Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and her own Chief of Staff Alex Segbefia, the Vice President was also welcomed by members of her family and the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church.
Her return marks the end of a period of public speculation and concern about her health.

Illness and treatment abroad
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reportedly fell ill on Friday, March 28, 2025, and was admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on March 29 for further observation and treatment. After a few days of evaluation and care, doctors recommended that she take extended medical leave to ensure full recovery.
On April 7, she officially commenced a three-week leave, traveling to London for advanced medical care as a precaution. During this time, her absence from public view led to growing public concern, with some even speculating falsely about her passing.

Public gratitude and clarification
Upon her arrival, the Vice-President addressed the nation briefly, thanking Ghanaians for their prayers and goodwill during her time away.
She extended heartfelt appreciation to her medical team at UGMC and acknowledged the unwavering support she received from President Mahama and his brother, businessman Ibrahim Mahama.
“I am deeply grateful for the prayers, the patience, and the outpouring of love from the Ghanaian people. I thank my doctors at UGMC and all the medical personnel who attended to me. Special thanks to His Excellency the President and his family for their compassion and unwavering support,” she said.

President Mahama reassures Ghanaians
President Mahama, who is currently on his post-election “Thank You Tour,” confirmed the Vice President’s return during a stop in Dodowa on Friday, May 16.
“I’m happy to state that I spoke to her yesterday morning, and she will be back in the country before the end of next week. By God’s grace, she is fully recovered and she’s going to come and go back to her duties,” he told a cheering crowd.
His comments brought reassurance to many who had been concerned about the Vice President’s prolonged absence.

Rumours and official response
During her medical leave, the Vice-President’s health became the subject of intense speculation.
Some fringe sources circulated unfounded rumours regarding her condition, prompting government officials to issue public clarifications.
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu and other officials repeatedly affirmed that the Vice-President was alive, recovering well, and in good spirits, urging the public to disregard misleading reports.
Return to duty
With her return, Vice-President Opoku-Agyemang is expected to resume her official duties in the coming days.
Her recovery and return come at a crucial time as the government prepares to advance key policy priorities in the final stretch of President Mahama’s term.
Her presence is expected to bring renewed energy to the administration and silence weeks of speculation, reaffirming her role as a key figure in Ghana’s political leadership.
