The First Lady of the Republic, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, received the award for Woman of the Year at the 9th annual Ghana Women of the Year Honours, in a night full of inspiration and celebration.
Her immense work to bettering women’s and children’s lives nationwide were recognized with this esteemed honor.
Mrs. Akufo-Addo, who is well-known for her dedication to education, was involved in the establishment of libraries in schools across the country, guaranteeing that every kid has access to books and a place that encourages a love of reading.
She has also given women the chance to pursue vocational training through her Rebecca Foundation, equipping them with the skills necessary to achieve security and financial independence.
Mrs. Akufo-Addo thanked God heartily and thanked Him for bringing her this far as she went to the platform to take her prize.
She sent her gratitude to Glitz Africa, the event organizers, for the award, stressing the importance of increased assistance for women and children in Ghana. “The foundation of our country’s economy is women and children,” she said.
“In order for them to have a long-lasting influence on our nation and society, we need to do more to ensure their success.”
As a tribute to Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, the former first lady of Ghana, the occasion served as a time for reflection and appreciation.
Mrs. Rawlings, an example for women’s rights and empowerment, received a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her unwavering commitment to advancing gender equality.
She thanked her family for their constant support and dedicated the prize to all women who are working to improve their communities in her address.
“It is a great honor for me to be given this award, as it is a testament to the effort and commitment of all those who have helped me along the way,” she added.
Additionally, Mrs. Rawlings used the occasion to pay tribute to Nana Afrakuma II of Akwamufie, a traditional leader who has served as a source of strength and inspiration for her people.
She said, “She has triumphed over innumerable obstacles and still stands tall, bringing her community together.”
Irene Naa Torshie-Addo, the first female administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund, was awarded the Excellence in Governance Award for her outstanding political performance.
She urged women to take leadership roles and demand greater representation in Ghana’s political landscape, expressing gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The event, hosted by Claudia Kwarteng Lumor, aimed to celebrate women’s achievements and inspire future generations.
According to her, the awards functioned as a call to action for upcoming generations, in addition to honoring the remarkable accomplishments of women.
The goal of the occasion, said Lumor, is to encourage young women to set lofty goals and pursue them.
Through commemorating these remarkable women’s accomplishments, we’re clearing the path for upcoming leaders.
