The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, demanded that the Marshal walk Dr Kwaku Afriyie, Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso, out of the chamber for making a rude comment.
When President Akufo-Addo nominated two justices to the Supreme Court, Alban Bagbin requested the house to probe the concerns about the full complement of judges when the Appointments Committee presented its report on the nominees to the plenary for consideration.
Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, a Sefwi-Wiawso MP, argued that the Speaker had no authority to make such discriminating remarks.
“I believe that as representative of the good people of Sefwi-Wiawso, it does not lie in your mouth to remind us of the things that you said.”
The Speaker became furious and ordered the MP to be taken out of the house after labelling the MP’s comment as rude and careless.
“This is a completely rude remark, and given my authority, I can send you out of the house now,” he said.
“I represent the entire nation; you represent the wonderful people of Sefwi-Wiaso. Marshal, please get him out of the house. Such rudeness will not be tolerated by me. Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh apologized to the Speaker on behalf of the caucus.”
“Speaker, we are grateful for your wisdom in guiding us and for getting us to this point. There have been stressful times in the House, and throughout it all, you have showed leadership. Now, it is our responsibility as a leadership to support you. The incident that occurred just now was regrettable.”
“Therefore, permit me to apologize to you and your office on behalf of the entire caucus as well as my fellow members. We genuinely hope that this puts a stop to the situation, but until then, let’s get serious about our regrets. I apologize on behalf of the member and the entire caucus.”
