Chiefs of the Nzema Traditional Area, where Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, originates from, have rejected the apology offered by the New Patriotic Party’s running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, about his recent comments about Dr. Nkrumah.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh claimed that President Akufo-Addo has advanced civilization more than any of the past presidents, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, at his unveiling in Kumasi. Following intense criticism, he issued an apology in a statement for the comment.

The Chief of Nkroful, Nana Kwasi Kutuah, along with Nzema Manle, stated at a press conference on Sunday, July 14, at Nkroful that although NAPO has apologized for his “Your Kwame Nkrumah” attack, his stance of not acknowledging that he has insulted Nkrumah in his apology was defensive and that he is needed in Nkroful to come and ask for forgiveness.

“We strongly condemn his remarks, which implied that he was referring to Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah by using the local Twi term “Mo Kwame Nkrumah Nu,” which means “Your Kwame Nkrumah.” The remarks made by Dr. Prempeh are offensive to our democracy and have the power to destroy national harmony and peace.

“It’s interesting to see that he did not acknowledge insulting Nkrumah in his release, which is insufficient. We thus urge him to return, as his claim is disingenuous.

“Several media reports have brought to our notice that Dr. Prempeh has apologized to Nkrumah and other former Ghanaian presidents. Therefore, we demand that Dr. Prempeh to travel to Nzema and meet with Nananom and Dr. Nkrumah’s family in Nkroful in order to unconditionally apologize to the kinsmen of the renowned icon,” he said.

The Chief of Nkroful, surrounded by the Chiefs and People of Nzema, issued a further warning to politicians hoping to profit from destroying Dr. Nkrumah’s legacy: be prepared for a fierce battle from Nzemas.

“We, the Chiefs and people of Nkroful, Nzema, and the Western Region, wish to convey to the world our appreciation for the accomplishments of Dr. Nkrumah and our determination to

prevent any individual or organization from tarnishing the hard-earned reputation of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

” We wish to caution all political players and those who support them to stop disparaging the image of the “African of the Millennium,” who the world has come to recognize as a universal symbol.

“Finally, we want to implore all political figures and the people who support them to spread ideas that will bring people together, promote peace, and advance Ghana, our motherland,” he continued.
