Organized Labour has voiced concerns about the ongoing sale of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) shares in four hotels to Rock City Hotel, which is owned by Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Agriculture.
The group has called on the government to halt the process, warning of a potential nationwide strike by workers if their demands are not met.
SSNIT is close to finalizing the divestiture of 60% of its shares in Labadi Beach Hotel, LA Palm Royal Beach Resort, Ride Royal Hotel, and Elmina Beach Resort to Rock City Hotel. This move has sparked widespread criticism, including a petition filed with CHRAJ by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
At a press conference in Accra on Monday, the Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress, Dr. Yaw Baah, expressed strong disapproval of the process. “The process is ongoing, and they are even accelerating it, which we believe is wrong,” he said. “We do not think that the regulations guiding the sale of state assets were followed, nor do we believe that the necessary due diligence was conducted. It is unimaginable that state properties would be sold to a minister of state.”
Dr. Baah further stated, “For us, this is state capture and it must be stopped immediately. If the Minister for Pensions, who is also the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, fails to stop SSNIT, we, the workers of Ghana who own these funds, will take action to halt the process ourselves.”
