The National Cathedral project, the idea of President Akufo-Addo, has been fraught with controversy since its start.
Initially billed as a personal initiative to be sponsored by private donations, it was later discovered that state monies were utilized to fund the building.
However, in a presentation to the media on Sunday, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Presidential Candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), pledged to complete the project if elected president, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder engagement in securing funds.
There has been dispute around the National Cathedral’s history. At first, some were skeptical about President Akufo-Addo’s 2016 campaign pledge to construct a national cathedral.
But in 2020, it came to light that the project had received over GHC339 million in state funding, which infuriated the populace.
Dr. Bawumia’s dedication to seeing the project through to completion signifies a major change in the government’s strategy.
In order to decide the project’s future, he underlined the importance of stakeholder engagement while acknowledging the public funds invested.
It is the result of public dollars invested in it. To choose how to finish the project, one should consult with stakeholders and churches. It’s a significant matter, he said.
