The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s (KBTH) outpatient Renal Dialysis Unit has reopened to the public after three weeks of closure.

This comes after the arrival of critical supplies needed at the unit to treat patients with kidney diseases. The KBTH Renal Unit was closed down three weeks ago by hospital management due to a lack of critical supplies.

During this time, management stated that it was striving to remove the important commodities that were stuck at the Tema Port.

The hospital management stated on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, that all consumables at the Tema Port will be cleared by the end of the week, allowing the unit to resume full operations.

Nevertheless, the hospital set the start of dialysis sessions for yesterday, Wednesday, August 21, 2024, due to the timely delivery of the necessary supplies.

A tax waiver has been granted by the Ministry of Finance to expedite the clearance of the second container at the Tema Port, in addition to this emergency consignment, according to the statement.

Amidst the scarcity of dialysis supplies, the management of KBTH has refuted any deaths that were reported at the renal dialysis unit.

This comes after reports that the institution was responsible for the deaths of 20 renal patients.

In a statement, the hospitals denied any involvement with the publication and blamed it on misread media fliers and sensationalized online comments on social networking sites, especially Facebook.

The report that Korle Bu Teaching Hospital lost 20 renal patients this year due to a dialysis supply constraint is untrue.

The statement made it clear that there were no deaths reported at the Renal Dialysis Unit

throughout the shortage period.

In response to allegations of outstanding indebtedness, the teaching hospital stated that all supplier arrears have been paid in full by the Ministry of Health.

“As falsely alleged, Korle Bu does not owe GH¢6 million to any supplier,” the statement stressed.
