Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, has urged the Western Region’s Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to expedite action on all projects being carried out under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme.
The minister added that these projects are critical to the government’s larger strategy of strengthening secondary cities as engines of socioeconomic progress.
Mr. Korsah made the call while visiting the Western Region and inspecting some ongoing infrastructure projects in the Ahanta West and Effia-Kwesimintsim municipalities under the GSCSP.
He visited 50 lockable establishments at the Agona Nkwanta Market in the Ahanta West Municipality, as well as two road construction projects.
The minister went around different road and drainage building sites in the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality to check on the progress of contractors.
Despite the fact that the contractors were almost at the end of their allotted time, he was not content with the amount of work that still needed to be done.
The minister went around different road and drainage building sites in the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality to check on the progress of contractors.
Despite the fact that the contractors were almost at the end of their allotted time, he was not content with the amount of work that still needed to be done.
Mr. Korsah voiced his displeasure over the fact that there was only one contractor managing all of the Ahanta West Municipality’s projects, which was the reason for the work’s delays.
He said that his industry would not tolerate any kind of deviation, thus contractors in charge of government projects have to put in a lot of effort to finish them on schedule.
Mr. Korsah stated, “The contract will be taken from the contractors and awarded to a more competent construction company if the contractors fail to complete the work by September 15 as agreed upon.”
Nonetheless, he maintained optimism that the projects would be finished on time and fulfill their intended roles of advancing the socioeconomic growth of the area.
The minister insisted on deadlines and demanded that quality be given more attention.
He called on district assemblies to strengthen their oversight responsibilities and make sure that every initiative satisfies the strictest requirements for longevity and effectiveness.
“The longevity and worth of these projects to our communities will depend on their quality. On this, we cannot back down,” he emphasized.
Ahanta West Municipal Chief Executive John Agyare claimed that the contractors’ failure to start work on time was the reason behind the delays in the projects’ completion.
