The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has issued a stern warning to drivers who have arbitrarily increased public transport fares in contravention of the Administrative Instrument governing fare adjustments in the country.

In a statement released by the GPRTU, the union emphasized that any unauthorized fare increases are illegal and must be halted immediately. The leadership of the GPRTU is currently engaging with stakeholders to review the various cost components affecting transport operations following recent adjustments in fuel prices.

The GPRTU recently met with the Ministry of Transport to present their demands and is working towards reaching a consensus on fare adjustments. Until an official decision is made and communicated to the public, any fare increases outside the Administrative Instrument should be disregarded.

Commuters are urged not to pay any fares that exceed the existing rates set by the GPRTU. The union has called upon Regional Administrations, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, as well as Station Welfare committees, to ensure compliance with the existing fares.

Drivers are reminded to abide by the directive from the GPRTU and have confidence in the leadership’s efforts to advocate for the welfare of transport operators. The union reassures the public that any decision regarding fare increments will be communicated in due course.
