The Ministry of Transport has issued a stern warning to public transport operators against unauthorized fare hikes, following reports of some drivers attempting to increase fares without proper approval.
In a press release dated April 14, 2024, the Ministry responded to recent developments where the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) jointly cautioned against transport fare increases by certain drivers, contrary to established directives.
According to the Ministry, negotiations are ongoing with transport operators to address pertinent issues affecting the industry. Therefore, any attempts by drivers to increase fares are deemed unacceptable and unauthorized.
In the statement, the Ministry called upon the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to enforce compliance with the directives issued by the GPRTU and GRTCC. The authorities have been urged to be vigilant and take appropriate action against any driver found violating the agreed-upon fare structure.
This development comes as concerns raised by commuters over potential fare hikes due to rising fuel prices and operational costs for transport operators. The Ministry’s intervention aims to ensure that any adjustments in transport fares are made in a regulated and transparent manner, following due process and consultations.
The press release emphasized the importance of maintaining order within the transport sector to safeguard the interests of both operators and the general public.
In light of this directive, commuters are encouraged to report any instances of unauthorized fare increases to the relevant authorities for immediate action.
The Ministry of Transport is committed to fostering constructive dialogue with transport stakeholders to address challenges facing the industry while ensuring fair and affordable transport services for all Ghanaians.
