In a move affecting commuters across Ghana, transportation fares are set to increase starting April 13, 2024. The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana and Transport Operators of Ghana have announced varying increments for different transportation services, aimed at addressing rising operational costs within the industry.

The new fare adjustments are as follows:

Short-distance or Intracity Transport: There will be a 15 percent fare increment for short-distance journeys within cities.

Intercity or Long-journey Transport: Fares for intercity travel will see a 20 percent increase.

Taxi Services: Taxi fares will also rise by 15 percent across the board.

Additionally, for short-distance taxi hire services, commuters can expect a significant fare adjustment. The fare for such services will rise from GHC 10.00 to GHC 15.00, reflecting a 50 percent increase.

The decision to revise transportation fares was made after consultations between the GPRTU and relevant stakeholders, taking into consideration the rising costs of fuel, spare parts, and other operational expenses. The GPRTU emphasized the necessity of these adjustments to ensure the sustainability of transport services and the welfare of operators.

In response to the announcement, some commuters have expressed concerns about the potential impact on their daily budgets, especially amid the prevailing economic challenges. However, the GPRTU has emphasized that these adjustments are unavoidable given the economic realities facing the transport sector.

Commuters are advised to prepare for the upcoming fare adjustments starting from April 13, 2024. The GPRTU has urged passengers to cooperate with transport operators during this transition period.

The GPRTU has pledged to continue monitoring the economic situation and make further adjustments as necessary to ensure the sustainability of transport operations and the overall welfare of stakeholders in the industry.
